US - Non-Immigrant - Student Visas

Student visas to study in the United States are available for academic, vocational, and exchange students.  Most student visas are issued to university students but may study at other educational institutions as long as the institution meets certain reporting and other requirements.  Students may not attend public elementary schools or publicly funded adult education programs.  Students may attend public secondary schools for up to 12 months if they show that they have reimbursed the school for the full cost of the education.

The prospective student must also show that he or she has sufficient funds to cover living expenses while in the U.S., must be proficient in English or be enrolled in English classes, and must maintain full-time student status.

Prospective students should contact schools and begin the admission process.  Upon acceptance by the school, the school will issue an I-20 form which is required to apply for an F-1 student visa.  Additionally, students are required to register with the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (“SEVIS”) before admission to the United States.

Students may be eligible for limited on-campus employment.
